With a profound sense of loss, we announce the unexpected and sudden passing of Michael. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years Geraldine (Geri), children Kirsten (Terry), Megan and Toren and his adored grandchildren Kira and Conor, Isaac and Dylan. His sisters Elizabeth (Jim) and Andrea, brother Robin. His niece Lisa (Paul), nephew Chris (Ronda) and their families, as well as a large extended family of cousins.
Michael was born in Auckland, NZ and raised in North Vancouver. He graduated from Delbrook High, where he was active in school sports playing football, rugby and track and field. He also was a Queen Scout and Seaforth Highlander cadet. On to UBC for one year before travel adventures beckoned and he was off on a two year journey around the world. Returning to Vancouver he re-entered UBC, qualified to study architecture and completed his degree. At this time he met and married his love Geri, and they travelled to Europe, living in London and travelling throughout Western Europe in their Volkswagen van.
Returning to Vancouver he joined the architectural firm of Toby Russell Buckwell, later TRB Architects, now Ratio Architecture. Michael had a diverse and successful career that spanned more than five decades. In 2010 he was recognized by his peers, becoming a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.
Michael was a committed volunteer for his community, donating his time and professional expertise to many West Vancouver Council Advisory committees, the W.V. Historical Society and the Hollyburn Heritage Society. He loved spending time in the mountains and at West Van beaches. Music was a life-long passion and for many years he supported the Vancouver Recital Society and the Vancouver Symphony. He also was an avid sports fan watching both soccer and rugby regularly. A voracious reader, he always had at least two historical non- fiction volumes on the go.
'Papa' was a proud and adoring grandfather, who was grateful for the time he had with his grandchildren. His quiet, calm, and always supportive nature was the anchor for our immediate family and his extended family; he will be sorely missed. We will celebrate Michael's life later in May, details to be announced.
Our family wishes to acknowledge and thank the many family members and friends who have sent their condolences. A donation to the charity of your choice in his name would be welcomed.
